Dr Afshin Yousefpour in the operating theatre
For physicians and ENT surgeons

Parotid and salivary gland tumours.

Dr Afshin Yousefpour, maxillofacial surgeon in Waterloo and in the CHIREC group hospitals, treats parotid and salivary gland tumours, facial skin cancer and head and neck lesions referred by colleagues.

A swelling in front of the ear?

Removing the tumour, protecting the facial nerve.

A lump in front of the ear or at the angle of the jaw may be a parotid tumour. Most are benign, such as pleomorphic adenoma or Warthin’s tumour, but their removal remains delicate because the facial nerve runs through the gland.

Dr Yousefpour combines three skills: facial nerve dissection, reconstruction of the defect left by the excision, and the techniques of aesthetic facial surgery, to preserve the contour of the face and keep the scar discreet.

Experience

A practice built in head and neck oncology.

After 12 years of training in Belgium and 7 years of surgical training in centres of excellence in the United Kingdom, Dr Yousefpour was appointed Consultant Specialist in oral and maxillofacial surgery in 2006. In the United Kingdom he led multidisciplinary head and neck oncology and facial reconstruction teams.

He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (FRCSEd) and now operates in the CHIREC group hospitals.

Management

From imaging to the histology result.

Assessment relies on MRI or ultrasound, with fine-needle aspiration where needed, so that the procedure is tailored to the type of tumour.

Parotidectomy is performed through a facelift-type incision, identifying and preserving the branches of the facial nerve under nerve monitoring and optical magnification. The histology result is sent to you with the operation report.

The pathway

Four stages, coordinated with you.

  1. Step 1

    Consultation

Your patient is seen in Waterloo or at Delta Hospital in Brussels. Clinical examination and review of existing imaging.

  2. Step 2

    Assessment

MRI or ultrasound, and fine-needle aspiration where needed, to establish the nature and position of the lesion.

  3. Step 3

    Surgery

Surgery under general anaesthesia in a CHIREC group hospital, usually with one night’s stay for a parotidectomy.

  4. Step 4

    Follow-up

Histology result, operation report and follow-up of healing, coordinated with you.

Our commitment

What you can expect from the practice.

The surgeon who sees your patient is the one who operates and follows them up.

  • Please mention urgent requests in your message, particularly when a tumour is suspected.

  • You receive the operation report and the histology result.

  • Your patient receives detailed information about the procedure, its risks and recovery.

  • Your patient can reach the practice by WhatsApp message throughout follow-up.

Referring a patient.

With your patient’s consent, send a WhatsApp message to the practice, or give your patient a referral letter: they will book in the same way. To prepare the consultation, it is helpful to include:

  • A letter setting out the clinical history and your question.

  • If available: report and images of MRI, ultrasound or CT, and any aspiration or biopsy result.

  • For medical documents, please use the eHealthBox rather than WhatsApp, to respect medical confidentiality and the GDPR.
